An interview with Ken Wall, coach and owner of Move Better, who opened the business in August 2016.

Tell us about Move Better, your team and your clients:
Having been in the health and fitness industry myself for almost 25 years, I was looking to start and develop a business that could grow and better serve our clients. After doing some research and feeling confident that the location in Trucksville (next to Sheetz) would be great for us, we opened Move Better in 2016.

Trust is a very important piece of the puzzle in fitness, so we’ve built a team that supports each other and our clients. Hillary (co-owner), Marissa (coach) and Dave (coach), along with myself have a deep understanding of the human component of coaching. We do everything in our power to help clients create health and fitness goals, stick with it and prevent injuries.

Many people think that personal trainers are just for losing weight, but losing weight doesn’t change your life. You lose weight when you change your life. And changing your life means different things to different people.

Our goal at Move Better is to help our clients do what they want to do. Whether that means a golfer who can still get out to play a few times a week; a 15 year old kid who is not able to play division one sports but can still be a contributor on the high school varsity team; or a mom whose husband now looks at her the same way he did when they were first married — the big transformations don’t change your life, but all the little wins do.

How have you adjusted your business and operations due to COVID-19?
Before the pandemic, we could have about 6 people here for small, in-person group sessions. When the restrictions were implemented, we switched to virtual sessions relatively quickly. We now offer all sessions on Zoom, and it’s very interactive. Our online sessions aren’t like a workout class that you can watch and passively participate — our clients keep their cameras on and our instructors are doing live training. We interact with every participant for a true two-way coaching experience.

As we have been able to reopen at limited capacity, Move Better now offers hybrid options. Clients can choose to train on-location, on-line or switch it up for a combination of both.

Interestingly, going virtual has allowed us to expand our member base and even retain some clients who had previously moved out of the area. Our clients now log in from Duryea, New York, Peckville, and more. In a way, the pandemic created an opportunity for us that we hadn’t taken advantage of before.

We’ve always been serious about cleaning throughout each day, and every weekend, Move Better gets a super deep clean. Our equipment has been reconfigured to allow for social distancing, and we’ve modified some workouts so clients can stay within their individual workout station.

Share something about Move Better that most people don’t know:
Collectively, our team has decades of experience. We’ve seen a lot throughout our careers! All of our clients are individuals, so we get to know them as people and figure out the best ways to help them stay motivated and safe. Helping our clients focus on form, consistency and progress is a priority.

The mental component of wellness and coaching can’t be underestimated. I’m always happy to see our clients and I remind them that the hardest part is walking through the door. Once they’ve made the choice to show up and be present, it just keeps getting better from there.

How does being part of the Back Mountain Chamber help your business?
I — along with all of our team members — am very community-minded. Pre-pandemic, we liked the social events and networking aspects of Chamber membership. Without the chance to get together in person, the Chamber helps us stay up to speed through email and social media updates.

What’s your favorite thing about living and working in Northeastern PA?
Growing up in Beaumont, I consider myself an avid outdoorsman, and I love the country. There was a point I had considered moving out west, but my parents and in-laws are local. The Back Mountain is home.

If someone is interested in trying Move Better, what’s the next step?
We’re always welcoming new clients. You can call us at 570-301-6757 and set up a time to meet with one of our team members in-person or virtually. New clients are welcome to stop by, observe a session and tour our facility. Masks are required and we are always mindful of safety and social distancing.

We are also pre-selling spots in our “Six Weeks for the Rest of Your Life Program” that will kick off in January. It includes everything you need to start looking, feeling and moving better for only $229. Early enrollees can start training through December for FREE! Give us a call for details.
